Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) is approved for patients with inflammatory and pruritic (or itchy) manifestations of skin conditions that are responsive to topical steroids. Examples of these skin conditions would be atopic dermatitis/eczema and psoriasis. Please discuss with your doctor if contact dermatitis and nummular eczema will benefit from a topical steroid.

Which Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) format is appropriate to use?
Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) cream is generally used for wet, oozing lesions and areas of the body where skin is thinner such as the face and body folds. Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) ointment is used for dry, thick lesions and areas of the body where skin is generally thicker such as the palms or soles.

How long can Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) be used?
It is recommended that Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) be used for not more than 2 weeks. If your rashes persist or do not seem to respond to treatment, please see your doctor.

How do you determine if eczema is dry or wet? Which format of Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) is appropriate to used for either dry or wet eczema?
Generally, the cream format is used for wet lesions and the ointment format is used for dry lesions. Lesions of eczema that are wet appear as itchy, red rashes that are oozing with fluid or weeping lesions. Dry lesions appear thickened, leathery or scaly. Consult a doctor to know for sure if one’s skin condition is eczema.

Can Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) be used on babies and children?
Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) may be used with caution on infants and children. Suitable precautions should be taken to avoid potential side effects. Apply thinly on affected skin once daily or as prescribed by one’s doctor. Avoid using on large surface areas. Do not cover the treated skin with gauze, cloth or any occlusive dressing.
Use of Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) in children should be limited to the least amount of days needed to manage the skin condition.
Consult one’s doctor for the ideal duration of treatment. If irritation develops, use should be discontinued immediately and seek doctor's advice.

Can Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) be used in Pregnant and Lactating/breastfeeding women?
There are no adequate and well controlled studies in pregnant and breastfeeding women. Like other steroids, it should be used in pregnant and breastfeeding women only when the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the mother, fetus or infant.

What are the common side effects of Mometasone Furoate (Elica®)?
The following local adverse reactions have been reported with mometasone furoate topical formulations: pruritus (itchiness), application site reactions (irritation/rednesss), bacterial infections, folliculitis, furunculosis (small boils), acneiform eruptions (pimples) and temporary signs of skin atrophy (whitening of the skin)

Can Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) cause whitening of the skin? Can Elica be used to whiten skin?
Hypopigmentation or lightening of the skin is due to a decrease in the production of melanin, a compound that is responsible for the brown color of skin.
Injury to the skin, as well as abuse of topical steroids, may cause hypopigmentation.
Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) is not indicated for skin lightening/whitening.

How should Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) be stored?
Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) should be stored at temperatures not exceeding 30°C.
To best preserve the quality and efficacy, Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) must be tightly sealed and stored at room temperature not exceeding 30°C. Take note of the expiration date (printed as D/M/Y) on the outer box.

Can I use Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) for more than 2 weeks at a time?
It is not recommended to use Mometasone Furoate (Elica®) for more than 2 weeks at a time. If symptoms persist, (if the rash is still there/keeps on coming back after 2 weeks), please consult your doctor.
